The Academic Senate Committee on Continuing Education & Workforce Development Committee met on Wednesday, February 9th at 1PM on Zoom

  1. Attendance: Dean Hui-Yin Hsu, Jannette Urciuoli, Jun Shin, Alison Cimino, Gabriel Lataianu, Anuradha Srivastava, Zeynep Akcay, Clara Wajngurt, Agnieszka Tuszynska.

     

    1. Approval of the Minutes from September and December 2021.

     

    1. Department of Labor (DOL) Strengthening Community Colleges (SCC) Grant: 

     

    -Soon the revised agreement will be discussed by Dean Hsu, Michael Polin, Dean Coradetti and Dr. Sandra Palmer and after that the agreement will go before the Academic Senate for approval.

    -CUNY develops 16 programs, 5 of them at QCC, which are mostly free grant-funded short-term training courses.

    - all CUNY-wide programs are related and students attending these programs can receive Credit for Prior Learning Credit in all colleges, including QCC.

    -the programs would help CUNY students to re-skill and/or upskill their technology careers.

     

     

    -Dean Hsu announced the kickoff event (Feb. 15 and 16) in a series of meetings to promote the 16 workforce development programs. Presently, more than 150 students had been registered to attend the event. She encouraged faculty to share the event across QCC.

    -The event would be focused on recruitment and information sessions. Later sessions will be focused on running Employer Panel Discussions to identify perspectives in developing industry connections. Google, H+H, Northwell Health, AWS (Amazon Web Services) are expected to get involved in these panels.

     

    -CUNY received the DOL (Department of Labor) Grant “The Strengthening Community Colleges Training Grant” (referred to as Strengthening Community Colleges or SCC).

    -It aims to build the capacity of community colleges to collaborate with employers and the public workforce development system to meet local and regional labor market demand for a skilled workforce.

    -The Consortium intends to create micro credential training programs. They will help students to start with accumulating credits useful in their careers and eventually in their educational goals.

    - Dean Hsu mentioned discussions to include CUNY programs in big companies’ workforce networks. For example, Amazon Web Services would offer access to paid internships at Amazon.

    -CUNY Central website was presented. The mission of this program is to remove all barriers in creating of one solidified CUNY workforce.

     

      • American Association of Community Colleges Meeting/Conference

    - The event proposal was accepted and it will take place on May 2, 2022 in New York City.

    - QCC will hold a presentation.

    -Dean Hsu pointed out that this event is the best place to share the best practices for continuing education. Our faculty are encouraged to participate. More details will follow soon.

     

      • QCC CEWD/CUNY Consortium received Noncredit and Credit Alignment Lab Award (focusing QCC Software Engineering & BCC Education)

    -QCC submitted the proposal and received the grant

    -QCC could be in the coaching session for the best practices in developing HIP learning communities.

    -Dean Hsu encouraged QCC faculty to attend such sessions to learn more about best practices in this area.

    -Dean Hsu offered details about the Certified Recovery Peer Advocate – (Certified Instruction). For example, certified people who have been through treatment programs for opioid addiction could be certified to support others in treatment.

      • Community College Growth Engine Fund

    - QCC is the First CUNY Community College to Offer Cloud Computing Micro- Credential Training.

    - A new cloud computing program has been written into an existing $5 million U.S. Department of Labor grant, which was awarded in February 2021 to a consortium of NYC community colleges and CUNY.

     

     

     ​3. Review CEWD Bylaws & Annual Review (Zeynep & Alison)

    • Zeynep Akcay, Committee Member, presented the bylaws for our committee
    • Alison Cimino, Chair of the Committee, shared the Steering Committee’s suggestions for our goals as written in our Annual Report from 2020-2021 to assess how we are meeting our committee goals.

     

    Additional Comments:

    Dean Hsu brought to attention of the Committee a great example of workforce training for film-making from other colleges to involve Liberal Arts students and faculty interested in this area.

     

    Alison and Agnieszka – suggested identifying Continuing Education and Workforce development database of initiatives and programs by discipline. We will share ideas at our next CEWD meeting.

     

    Jannette Urciuoli, of the Steering Committee of the Academic Senate, encouraged faculty to present their CEWD-related work in front of the Steering Committee. She also suggested to continue posting in advance the date of the future meetings. She added that that a clear schedule would facilitate the participation of student representatives in our committee.

     

    1. Next Meeting was set up for April 27th, 2022, 1-2 PM (rescheduled to May 4th 1-2 PM).
