The Academic Senate Committee on Continuing Education & Workforce Development Committee met on March 6th, 2024, at 12 noon in Room: A-403

Business:

The meeting was called to order at 12:00 PM

  1. Welcome Remarks: Rex Taibu, the chairperson of the committee, delivered the opening remarks and extended a warm welcome to all attending members.
  2. Attendance: Dean Ellen Hartigan, Deon Gibson, Alison Cimino, Lori Conkling (Secretary), Jun Shin (Chemistry), Rex Taibu (Chairperson), Ekaterina Manafeeva, and Elaine Loannou
  3. Review of Minutes from November 29th Meeting: During the CEWD session, members reviewed and approved the minutes from the November 29th meeting.
  4. Update on Review of CEWD Charges: Rex Taibu provided the committee with an update on the progress of reviewing the proposed charges for the CEWD committee. He noted that, at that time, there had been no updates from the by-laws committee, as the chairperson had mentioned they were still finalizing the details. The CEWD committee collectively agreed to email the chairperson of the bylaws committee to inquire about the current status of the proposed changes to CEWD charges.
  5. Progress and Updates on the CEWD Reorganization Plan: The committee discussed several ideas aimed at promoting the services of the Office of Continuing Education. One suggestion was to encourage CEWD students to audit college courses to increase course enrollment. Another proposal involved investigating the possibility of advertising CEWD on a Learning Management System (LMS) like Brightspace. Additionally, there was a conversation about contacting all faculty members to promote CEWD courses. The committee also suggested creating a flyer to be distributed to the Provost’s office for dissemination. Furthermore, there was a commitment to regularly showcase CEWD courses and training programs. The Dean of CEWD announced that the upcoming showcase was scheduled for April 16th from 1 to 3 PM. It was also announced that CEWD is experiencing significant profits for AY 2023-2024 due to CEWD reorganization plan.
  6. Updates on CEWD Grants: Lori Conkling announced exciting news that CEWD had been awarded a new grant, with further details to be provided shortly. The new grant, totaling $250K, is designated for training the city’s New-New Yorkers as Teaching Assistants in English Language.
