The Academic Senate Committee on Continuing Education & Workforce Development Committee met on Wednesday,May 4th at 1PM on Zoom


Committee Members in Attendance:

  1. Approved the minutes from February

 

  1. Welcome incoming committee members: 
  • Professor Daniel Armstrong, of Health and Physical Education
  • Rex Taibu of the Department of Physics

Dean Hsu and the Committee also thanks Dr. Anuradha Srivastava and Dr. Gabriel Lataianu for their service to the committee, as their terms end at the end of April. Thank you both for your service and commitment to Continuing Education and Workforce Development. We are especially grateful to Dr. Lataianu for serving as secretary this past year. Dean Hsu and the Committee also thank Alison Cimino for her service as Chair of the CEWD Committee, as she has declined to run again. Additionally, the Committee thanks Dr. Agnieszka Tuszynska for her service as Steering Committee Designee and Dr. Jannette Urciuoli for her service and assistance as Academic Senate Steering Committee liaison. The committee welcomes Dr. Zivah Katz who will serve as the new Academic Senate Steering Committee liaison.

  1. Elections for Chair and Secretary

Elections for chair and secretary will resume next semester in Fall 2022, as we did not have a quorum and those present declined to run.

  1. Guest:
  • Philip Pecorino, Chair of Pre-College Committee visited our committee to share the work Pre-College has done this year to create a clear process for students to receive credit for prior learning.
  • He reviewed ways to include micro-credentials and credits for prior learning into our departments and encouraged members of our committee to urge our department chairs to create a clear pathway for adult learners and students to take credit bearing programs and degree programs.
  • Dean Pullen created forms to recognize pre-college experiences.
  • Each department must create its assessment for prior learning or criterion to be reviewed.
  • The Pre-College Committee asserts that no one person be responsible for awarding pre-college credit and is working with department chairs to make sure departments comply.
  • Pecorino noted that a website is being created so that prospective students may understand the process for receiving credits for prior learning.
  • Continuing Education and Workforce Development Committee is also encourage to assist in creating clear pathways for students to receive credits for prior learning and micro credentials.
5. Dean Hsu’s Report:
Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) Conference will be at Queensborough Community College—cultivating new beginnings through peer recovery, advocating for CRPA Career
  • Creating pathways in the post-pandemic landscape
  • QCC’s Dr. Salis and Dr. Srivastava will present
  • June 10th & 11th—register by May 15th
  • Keynote speaker is Dr. Kelly McGuire, Medical Director of Emblem Health
    • Credit for Prior Learning
      • Strengthening Community Colleges SCC Grant
      • American Community Colleges
      • Department of Labor
      • Remove barriers for our students
      • 16 Workforce Training Programs
        • 5 programs across 4 colleges
        • 1,011 students enrolled so far
        • Of those students, 673 responded to our study
        • 396 students expressed an interest in receiving credit for prior learning
        • 164 wanted more information
      • Cannabis Workforce Development
        • Apply grants to support cannabis workforce development
        • Create job opportunities and destigmatize cannabis production
        • Create Certificates for
          • Apprenticeship
          • Entrepreneurship
          • Dispensary Associate Certificate
        • We are in the initial phases of creating the program
        • Two-way bridge: Students in the program may take certificates to be employable and to enter a credit bearing course
