III. 2021 Senate Elections
Nominating petitions were distributed to faculty at the April 21, 2021 Senate meeting for the election of new Faculty Members-at-Large in addition to CLT’s and HEO’s who were eligible for reelection. The Senate, in part, consists of 41 Faculty Members-at-Large, 2 CLT Members-at-Large and an Adjunct Faculty Member. Nomination reminders were sent out to Faculty, HEOS’s and Adjunct Faculty. 13 Faculty were nominated for 13 positions which all run through April 2024, however, one nominee, Sarbani Ghoshal with 42.19 percent of the votes was not elected as the Department of Biology & Geological Sciences was at limit with a total of five (5) members of the Senate after the election of Mangala Tawde, also from Biological Sciences & Geology. The election was conducted online for two weeks in March. The polls were opened on Monday, March 8th and closed on Monday, March 22nd. As noted, due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, faculty were able to access the polls remotely. The online system was managed by David Moretti (Senate Technology Officer) with assistance from Raj Vaswani (Information Technology). The results of the Senate elections (Faculty at Large) are tabulated below.
Faculty-at-Large Election Results;
Rank Candidate Votes Percentage
1 Philip Pecorino, Social Science 117 60.94 Reelected
2 Azita Mayeli, Math & CS 99 51.56 Newly Elected
3 Mangala Tawde, Biological Sciences & Geology 98 51.04 Reelected
4 Franca Ferrari-Bridgers, Speech Communication &
Theater Arts 97 50.52 Reelected
5 Patrick Wallach, Math & CS 97 50.52 Reelected
6 Arthur Adair, Speech Communication &
Theatre Arts 92 47.92 Reelected
7 Christina Manzo, Business 91 47.40 Elected
8 Yusuf Gurtas, Math & CS 90 46.88 Newly Elected
9 Isabella Lizzul, Health & PE 84 43.75 Reelected
10 Jodi Van Der Horn-Gibson, Speech
Communication & Theater Arts 84 43.75 Newly Elected
11 Sarbani Ghoshal, Biology &
Geological Sciences 81 42.19 Not Elected;
at Limit
12 Melida Sanchez, Foreign
Languages & Literatures 74 38.54 Reelected
13 Mark Ulrich, Business 73 38.02 Newly Elected
Pursuant to Senate Bylaws, Article I, Section 2; Senate membership is limited to five faculty members from each department. Based on the above, we had two candidates from Biology &
Geological Sciences, and only one available slot available for that department. Mangala Tawde carried as she had more votes than Sabani Ghoshal.
Since there are 13 available Faculty-at-Large seats to fill and one of the 13 candidates represents a department which is at limit, it leaves the Senate with one seat short for this election cycle.
Therefore, at the May 11th meeting of the Academic Senate the Senate elected Ronald Van Cleef, (History) to fill the seat which was subject to the faculty limit from the department of Biology & Geological Sciences. Additionally, the Senate elected Reuvain Zahavy, (Mathematics) to fill the newly vacant seat of Dr. Margo Edlin, who resigned her Faculty-at-Large seat to move into the position of Chair of the Dpt. of English.
Additionally, at the April Senate meeting the following Senate Seat appointments were approved;
CLT Representative for one open seat;
Rank Candidate Votes Percentage
1 John Luby, Business 16 100 Reelected
There was only candidate for the one open CLT Representative seat, therefore, John Luby, having obtained the required supporting signatures was reappointed.
Adjunct Faculty Representative candidates for election for this year’s open seat;
1 Richard Tayson, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Dpt. of English was the only candidate for the position and was reelected to the one open Adjunct Faculty Representative Position, having obtained the required number of supporting signatures.
- Nominations to QCC Standing Committees of the Academic Senate
Faculty and HEOs were invited to select the committees on which they would prefer to serve via an online system. The database was supervised by David Moretti, Senate Technology Officer and managed by Raj Vaswani. The list of eligible instructional staff was assembled by Debra DiBattista (Human Resources and Labor Relations). At least two reminder emails were sent out during the selection period.
This semester, 37 members of the instructional staff indicated their committee preferences for 48 available positions. Even though our database applicants were insufficient this year to cover the available seats, the use of our complied reserve list allowed other applicants to fill in the other 11 available opportunities for committee service. Lastly, the total number of available Senate committee seats this year was 144.
The CoC had at least three Zoom meetings in March and conducted business through email and by telephone throughout the semester. Final approvals of committee appointments were voted on and approved by the Committee. The list of appointments was compiled by the Chair of the CoC and then circulated by email to members of the CoC for consideration and approval. Members were asked to evaluate and comment on the appointments as listed. The Committee looked at the various candidates’ qualifications, as well as the need for college service with respect to tenure and promotion. Adjustments to the ballot were made via email. Every effort was made to balance the distribution of candidates across departments. All CoC members had the opportunity for comments and ultimately all members of the CoC approved the appointments on Wednesday, March 24th at our Zoom meeting.
Committee nomination notices must be sent with at least two weeks’ notice, in compliance with Article VII, section 4a of the Bylaws, the ballot must be circulated to the instructional staff at least two weeks before the election. All College Senate mandated deadlines, meetings and election requirements were fulfilled.
The list of elected faculty and HEO’s who were elected to the Senate Committees is Attached hereto entitled “Standing Committees of the Academic Senate for the Term Ending 2024,” and is attached herein as Schedule “A.”
The CoC will continue to work to maintain a list of instructional staff not placed on a committee assignment. This list will be consulted to fill vacancies as they arise during the year. The CoC will also make suggestions to the Steering Committee regarding suitable Steering Committee Designees.
- Standing Committee and Academic Senate Vacancies for 2021-2022 Academic Year
Whenever vacancies arise on a standing committee of the Academic Senate, the members of the Committee on Committees vote by email to appoint a new committee member. When a vacancy arises on the Academic Senate, the CoC Chair confers with the Senate Technology Officer to review the results of the previous Senate election and determine who will fill the vacancy. During the 2020-2021 academic year, the Committee on Committees was called upon to administer the election process of a new Senator. The Senate elected Prof. Anthony Kolios, (Business) to fill the vacancy when Prof. S. B. Murolo, (Business) resigned his Faculty-at-Large seat due to his election as Chair of the Department of Business. The CoC was also called upon to fill several committee vacancies to comprise the current committee membership as shown in the attached schedule entitled “Standing Committees for the 2021- 2022 Academic Year.”
- Support and Gratitude
It was truly a pleasure to serve on the Committee on Committees. This year in particular was challenging due to the issues relating to the COVID-19 Pandemic. However, everyone on the Committee contributed and pulled together in order to fulfill the goals and obligations of the Committee.
A special word of thanks however, to our Secretary, Julian Stark who provided invaluable assistance to me this past spring which was beyond his usual dedicated service throughout the year.
Additionally, David Moretti, our Senate Technology Officer was critical to our work and provided me with constant necessary technical support throughout this challenging year.
Also, I would like to thank Raj Vaswani for managing the CoC database.
Lastly, it would not have been possible to conduct our business without the unwavering support and encouragement of Dean Liza Larios, Dr. Stephen Dahlke, Dr. Jannette Urciuoli, Dr. Zivah Perel Katz.
Respectfully submitted,
Stephen W. Hammel, JD,
Chairperson, Committee on Committees
