Monthly Report of the Committee on Committees for May 2023
I. Academic Senate Roster
The table below denotes the results of the election of the Faculty Members at Large who were elected to the Academic Senate. There were 14 seats available. An email encouraging faculty to run (and seek the 7 nominating signatures) were emailed on March 4, 2023. Big Pulse was utilized to launch the election with a voting period running from March 29, 2023 to April 16, 2023. Faculty members who were elected were notified via email on April 30, 2023 and then again on May 2, 2023.

Note: Emily Tai (Professor of History) was mistakenly included on the ballot and received 171 votes, with a percentage of 64.29. However her term was not up (it expires April 2025). Daniel Garbin was then elected, and it resulted in a tie between Sunil Dephipawala and Celia Sporer to fill a vacated seat. However, Sunil Dephipawala withdrew her nomination on May 5 which resulted in Celia Sporer being assigned to fill the vacated seat.
II. Committee on Committee Membership Elections and Resignations
a. On April 28, an email from the Steering Committee were sent to all departments who did not currently have representation on the Committee on Committee to ask for nominations for the 2023-2026. Since Julian Stark, current secretary, has been training to be the next chair and was granted an extension by the Academic Senate, only two slots on the C of C needed to be filled. Those members who terms have expired are Danny Sexton (English) and Hamid Namdar (Engineering Technology).
b. On May 3, two additional slots on the Committee on Committee became available due to one
committee member being elected the chair of her department and another one resigning. Sue Riekert was elected chair of the Nursing Department and Christine Mooney (Business) resigned.
c. At the May 9 Senate Meeting, Aliza Atik (Associate Professor, English) and Sebastian Murolo (Associate Professor, Business) were elected to serve 3-year terms on the Committee on Committees. Their terms will expire Spring 2026.
d. Given that the Bylaws prevents the Committee on Committees from filling its own vacancies, the Steering Committee filled the two vacated spots on the C on C. Jessica Prepetit (Assistant Professor of Nursing) and Sharon Reeves (Associate Professor of Foreign Language and Literatures) will fill the vacated seats of Riekert and Mooney. Prepetit and Reeves’ terms will expire Spring 2024.
III. New Chair and Secretary on the Committee on Committees
On May 3, the current membership of the Committee on Committees met to vote on a new chair and secretary. With quorum, Julian Stark was elected chair for 2023-2024 and Paul Sideris was elected as new secretary.
IV. Standing Committees Resignations and Vacancies Filled
a. James David Nichols (History) resigned from the Committee on WID/WAC. The C on C voted on May 3 affirmatively for Madeline Ruggiero to complete his term, which will end in 2024.
b. Mi-Seon (Christine) Kim (Library) resigned from the Committee on Computer Resources. The C on C voted on May 9 affirmatively for Amos Orlofsky (Biological Sciences and Geology) to completer her term, which will end in 2024.
c. William Blick (Library) resigned from the Committee on Bylaws. The C on C voted on May 9 affirmatively for Mangala Tawde (Biological Sciences and Geology) to complete his term, which will end in 2025.
d. Raymond Lam (Engineering Technology) resigned from the Committee on Library. The C on C voted on May 9 affirmatively for Howard Sporn (Mathematics and Computer Science) to complete his term, which will end in 2026.
