Academic Senate Meeting Minutes

Steering Committee Chairperson Dr. Steven Dahlke called the sixth regularly scheduled meeting of the Academic Senate to order at 3:11 PM.

I. Attendance:

49 votes were recorded at the time attendance was taken; 66 members of the Academic Senate were present during the meeting.

II. Approval of the Agenda:

A motion was made, seconded, and adopted 59-0-0 to approve the agenda with the addition of the Committee on Curriculum's supplemental report (Attachment D) and the informational item, “Developmental Options for Students for 2020-21 Catalog").

III. Consideration of minutes of the February 11, 2020 meeting of the Academic Senate (Attachment A):

A motion was made, seconded, and adopted 59-1-0 to approve the February 11, 2020 minutes (Attachment A).

IV. Communications from:

1. Interim President Lynch

   The Senate received Interim President Lynch's March 2020 Report.

   Because of the evolving situation regarding the Coronavirum, Interim President Lynch was attending to other mattes and Chief Operating Officer Sherri Newcomb spoke in his place. With the input of Provost Sandra Plamer, COO Newcomb informed the Senate about relevant developments at the college and university level.

2. Senate Steering Committee Report

The Senate received the Steering Committee's March 2020 Report.

Upon Interim President Lynch's arrival, he addressed the Senate regarding issues related to the Coronavirus and its impact on the college and university.

V. Degrees—informational item

The Senate received the names of the January 2020 graduates (Attachment B).

VI. Monthly Reports of the Committees of the Academic Senate

There were three votes taken on the reports from the Committee on Curriculum.

1. A motion was made, seconded, and adopted 66-0-0 to adopt three course revisions from the Department of Art and Design (from Attachment C).
2. A motion was made, seconded, and adopted 66-0-0 to adopt a program revision from the Department of Art and Design (from Attachment C).
3. The Senate was asked to vote on revisions to the prerequisites of 46 courses in response to changes in remediation protocol on campus. These were included in the Supplemental Report (Attachment D). These revisions referred to page XXX of the course catalog, the draft of which was also submitted by the Committee on Curriculum on behalf of the Office of Academic Affairs (“Developmental Options for Students for 2020-21 catalog”). During discussion, the issue was raised that courses with provisional language like “page xxx” cannot be submitted to the university for approval. A motion was made, seconded, and adopted 31-30-0 to table voting on these 46 course revisions until the appropriate language was found and then the Steering Committee would vote on the Senate's behalf before the April meeting.
