Guidelines for Course Paper
Urban Studies Internship Program (UBST) - Professor Tricarico
The Urban Studies Internship Program requires an academic paper for completion of the course. A 5 page paper should adhere to the following guidelines:
Answer a question that arises from the internship or that may have occurred to you before commencing the internship. Now that you have spent a substantial amount of time on the inside as it were, you should be in a better position to answer that question. Perhaps other questions have arisen that you can articulate if not actually answer.
The paper is designed for you to conduct research into these questions. To this extent, your scholarly research will take you beyond this work performed for the internship. For example, an intern at a local NYPD precinct can further examine the nature of “community affairs” work. A paper can be organized around the questions:
- What does “community affairs” mean”?
- What skills are necessary for the law enforcement professional?
- Why is “community affairs” important?
- When does the community become a problem?
You are asked to prepare an outline for this paper and encouraged to discuss it with me in my office.
