How to Develop an Evaluation Plan for Your Grant Application

November 29, 2023 (12 Noon – 1 PM)

Overview: Not all grant proposals require an evaluation plan; however, in recent years, most program announcements and funding opportunities stipulate an evaluation strategy or plan with specific milestones. If an evaluation plan is required, it will be listed in the program announcement. Most often, more significant, more involved grant proposals will always require an evaluation plan. An outcomes evaluation is an integral part of a grant proposal that informs investigators and sponsors on improving a project during its development and implementation. A final summative evaluation provides a post-project analysis of the extent to which the project met its goals after it has been completed. This webinar will cover the following topics: What is a project evaluation? Why is it needed? Should you include an evaluation plan in your proposal if it is not required? What kinds of evaluations exist, and how do you choose the right evaluator for your project? Should you always employ an outside independent evaluator in your project? Should you always include a logic model? How can a logic model be helpful in the implementation of an evaluation plan?

Targeted Audience: All CUNY Faculty.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)-Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Minority Research Grant Program (MRGP)

January 24, 2024 (12 Noon – 1 PM)

Overview: MRGP provides funding opportunities to support health equity research conducted by minority-serving institutions. The purpose of the MRGP is to support researchers at minority-serving institutions exploring how HHS can better meet the healthcare needs of CMS beneficiaries. The MRGP supports research on discovering and characterizing health processes, practices, behaviors, and burdens or issues related to CMS programs, policies, and operations, which influence health equity. Research may comprehensively address the social determinants of health that drive or influence the barriers and opportunities of populations supported by CMS benefits, services, and coverage. Research should focus on understanding how inequities in communities impact health. It may also employ participatory methods that foster equitable engagement of affected communities in research, such as convening community members/groups, community-based organizations, advisory groups, and service providers. MRGP goals are to 1) Develop capacity at minority-serving institutions to research health disparities and social determinants of health; 2) Understand the root cause of issues – processes, practices, behaviors, and burdens – that lead to health disparities and identify replicable interventions; and 3) Strengthen CMS programs by disseminating best practices uncovered through funded research.

How to Develop Budgets and Budget Narratives for Federal Grants

March 27, 2024 (12 Noon – 1:00 PM)

Overview of Webinar: Two critical components of a federal award application are the budget and the budget narrative. This webinar provides step-by-step instructions on how to develop a federal award budget. Some federal agencies or subagencies offer guidelines on preparing an application budget. The budget details the total cost for each budget category, while the budget narrative requires a breakdown and a justification for every item in the budget. The first step in creating a budget is determining what template to use. If there is a required template for the budget and budget narrative, the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) or solicitation will usually provide it in the details of the NOFO. If a federal awarding agency does not require a specific template, a suggested template will be provided during the webinar that faculty can use to prepare and submit budgets. A well-prepared budget should be reasonable and demonstrate that the requested funding will be used wisely. The budget should be as concrete and specific as possible in its estimates. Make every effort to be realistic and to estimate costs as accurately as possible based on the activities and scope of the project. This webinar will show you how to Create a budget, Discuss the difference between direct vs. indirect costs, calculate indirect rates & costs, elucidate allowable and unallowable costs, Calculate the fringe rate, and Create a budget narrative.

Targeted Audience: All CUNY Faculty.

Research and Training Grant Opportunities for Community College Faculty

April 24, 2024 (12 Noon – 1 PM)

Overview: Community colleges are vital to our nation’s higher education framework. For more than a century, community colleges, once called “junior colleges,” have served the following essential missions with remarkable success. Community colleges offer training for specific skills and jobs. Most often, these technical and vocational programs are two years or less in length and typically result in the awarding of a certificate. This credential attests to the satisfactory completion of the program. Vocational education is an important opportunity for individuals and constitutes a significant form of economic development and community revitalization. Major Federal funding agencies often overlook community colleges when they distribute their research and training funding. However, Federal agencies are an essential source of funding for Community Colleges. This webinar will discuss opportunities available to CUNY community college in three Federal agencies: The National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the U.S. Department of Labor. The National Science Foundation programs that will be discussed include Expanding AI Innovation through Capacity Building and Partnerships (ExpandAI) and the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Program. The NASA programs that will be discussed will be the D.4 University Leadership Initiative (ULI) and the F.23 Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Bridge Program. The U.S. Department of Labor programs in the Employment and Training Administration that will be discussed will be the Strengthening Community Colleges Training Grants Program and the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Program.
