About the Program
What Does the QCC Dance Program Offer?
Majors:
The QCC Dance Program offers technique classes for dance majors in ballet, modern, and African/Afro-Caribbean as well as improvisation, choreography, and performance based classes that have included forms such as modern, contemporary, hip-hop, Step, and African. Our partnership with the CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI) provides opportunities for students to take master classes and attend lecture demonstrations with CDI guest artists in residence. The QCC Dance Program offers several performing opportunities throughout the year including the Kwanzaa Performance, Dance Workshop, Dance Repertory, the American College Dance Association (ACDA), and informal in-studio showings as well as a chance to open for a professional dance company. A Foundations class for incoming dance majors also provides additional somatic work to train the body as well as the tools you will need to have a successful and long career in dance. The QCC Dance Program is an open-enrollment program. There is no audition required to become a dance major, just an open mind and a desire to work hard. All incoming dance majors must take a placement class in order to determine which dance classes will help them progress the most.
Non-Majors:
Non-majors are welcome to take any dance class. A placement class is required for anyone taking a majors dance class. The dance program also offers several dance classes in the DAN 100 series for non-majors that require no previous experience in dance, no placement class, and which fulfill the PE requirement for all degrees at QCC that have a Physical Education requirement. Non-major dance classes offered include Beginning Modern, Beginning Ballet, African/Afro-Caribbean, Music Video Dance, and Latin Dance. The dance program also offers a lecture/discussion class that serves as the dance history course (DAN 111 Introduction to the Art of Dance). This class also fulfills the Creative Expression requirement in the Flexible Core and is required for dance majors.
