Gibney Dance Center
Summer & Winter Intensive Scholarships
QCC has a relationship with Gibney Dance Center where Gibney Dance Center offers one scholarship to their Winter Intensive in January and one scholarship to their Summer Intensive in June/July to a QCC dance major through a Ready Scholarship. The scholarship includes full tuition along with some additional support from Gibney. The QCC faculty select students who demonstrate a strong work ethic evidenced in how they work in class, the work they are putting in outside of class, their attendance, and their commitment to their dance studies. These intensives are INTENSIVE. They provide multiple classes a day, wellness, viewing performances, and workshops as well as other services such as head shots and dance shots that students can use as they transfer and in entering the professional world. They also create an opportunity for students to network with other dancers in the field and other artists/dance makers in the field. This is immersive and invaluable.
Gibney Dance Center is also beginning a new program that will have its inaugural year beginning this September. They are offering over a $12,000 scholarship to one of our graduates who is in need of a gap year. This student will receive unlimited classes, allowing them to take multiple classes a day. They will receive training in a multiplicity of areas around career development. They will also attend both the Winter Intensive and the Summer Intensive. This will help prepare the student for auditioning for BFA programs or entering the field.
Dance Entropy Intensive Scholarships
Every year, Valerie Green comes to QCC in the Spring to audition QCC dance majors for her summer intensive that takes place every July for one week. She offers up to five half scholarships to QCC Dance Majors to attend her summer intensive with Dance Entropy at Green Space Studios in Long Island City. Students take technique classes every day, choreography, and a performance lab. They also receive somatics training in yoga and pilates. The week culminates in a performance in Green Space’s theater. Our students who have attended Valerie’s intensive rave about how it helped them grow as a dancer and evolve as a performer and dance maker.
Summer Study Scholarships
All of the proceeds from ticket sales from both the Dance Workshop Concert and the Guest Artist Concert goes into a summer study scholarship fund for students who participated in Dance Workshop. Students who participated in Dance Workshop can submit an essay explaining what summer study plans they have, what intensives they plan on attending, the cost, how much they are requesting in scholarship funds, and how it will benefit them. The QCC Dance Faculty then determine how to distribute the funds to those who applied based on their work ethic throughout Dance Workshop and how clear their plans are. Students have received funding to support their summer study at intensives such as The American Dance Festival at Duke University, Earl Mosley’s Institute of the Arts Summer Intensive, Harlem School for the Arts Summer Intensive, Movement Research’s Melt Summer Intensive, as well as class cards for Gibney Dance Center, Peridance Center, and Broadway Dance Center to take individual classes during the summer that accommodates their work schedules. Scholarships have ranged between $100-$500 depending on what is requested, how many students apply, and how much funding we have. We are happy to accept donations to this fund! If you are interested in donating to the Summer Study Scholarship Fund, please e-mail Emily Berry at [email protected] for instructions on how to donate.
CDI classes and performances
In addition to the Master Classes and Lecture Demonstrations hosted at QCC through the CUNY Dance Initiative, CDI also sponsors a mirraid of free to low cost classes and workshops on other campuses from CDI artists at other campuses. This also includes low cost performances throughout NYC. Dance majors receive regular e-mails inviting them to these opprotunities. You can also stay abreast of what is being offered on CDI’s website.
Free Dress Rehearsals
QCC adjunct faculty Carrie Stern has been extremely gracious in setting up opportunities for her DAN 111 students that she has extended to all dance majors and other sections of DAN 111. Carrie sends out invitations throughout the semester to attend free dress rehearsals at major dance venues across NYC for prominent artists in the field. These often culminate in a talk back with the artist. This allows dance majors to see phenomenal dance concerts for free right before they open to the public. They also create an opportunity for students to engage with the artists. Dance majors receive e-mail invitations throughout the semester that they can RSVP for these opportunities.
