Tenure & Promotion Support

Professional Development Workshops

The Office of Academic Affairs organizes a series of professional development workshops for faculty each year covering topics having to do with reappointment, tenure, and promotion.  The workshop presenters include the Dean of Faculty, Chairs, Faculty Governance Leaders, and invited faculty members. In recent years, this series has included the following topics:

  • “What you Need to Know When Applying for the Rank of Professor”
  • “Promotion and Tenure for Mid-Career Faculty”
  • “General Information Session on Reappointment and Tenure Processes for Assistant Professors”
  • “Opportunities for Service to the College and Opportunities and Programs at QCC and CUNY for Professional Development”
  • “Practice Sessions on Presenting Before Faculty Personnel and Budget Committee for Full Professor”

Typically, this series is offered throughout the spring term and publicized through the Events Calendar and weekly event emails.

Faculty Mentoring Program

In addition, the Office of Academic Affairs organizes the Faculty Mentoring Program for new full-time faculty mentors to help promote a supportive environment and sense of community.  The Dean of Faculty works with department Chairs to match new full-time faculty members with tenured faculty members who volunteer to serve as mentors, updates and distributes a booklet describing the responsibilities and benefits of being a mentor, and organizes two luncheons, one in the fall for mentors, and one in the spring for both mentors and mentees.  The fall luncheon introduces the purposes of the program, elicits feedback from past participants, and includes a panel of tenured faculty members who discuss their experiences as mentors.  The spring luncheon includes both mentors and mentees and provides an opportunity for reflection and future plans.  The Office of Academic Affairs also provides a fund to reimburse mentors for taking their mentees out to lunch and provides informal support and information to Chairs, mentors, and mentees.
