While Chinese university best practices for the adoption of the Academic English textbook series initially intended for the North American educational and cultural context is a great choice, good teaching materials are not enough to resolve the longstanding issues in teaching English to Chinese EFL students. The reasons are threefold: the importance of teacher competence, student learning skills, and the problem of teacher/student resistance to change in English language education. By presenting an overview of China’s academic English writing instructions as it exists today, this paper aims at providing American readers with direct insights into how cultural practices might hinder the effective use of academic English reading and writing textbooks
