Grants

  • Dr. Lorraine Cupelli and Dr. Georgina Colalillo were awarded the 2022-2023 Nursing Innovation Grant on October 24, 2022, for the implementation of a bridge program and supplemental instruction for second-semester nursing students from January to May 2023.

  • Dr. Sarbani Ghoshal of the Biological Sciences Department co-authored a peer-reviewed research article published in collaboration with Saint Louis University School of Medicine entitled "Adropin correlates with aging-related neuropathology in humans and improves cognitive function in aging mice." Published in NPJ Aging and Mechanisms of Disease (Nature Publishing Group) on August 30, 2021.

  • Dr. Kevin Kolack presented an invited lecture on March 24, 2021 entitled "Academic Integrity vs. Google and Chegg" as part of the American Chemical Society's seminar series "Platforms for Academic Integrity."

  • Dr. Clarence Hall was invited by Dr. Joseph Henderson, faculty in the Department of Environment and Society at Paul Smith's College to talk about his recently published book, "A Prison in the Woods: Environment and Incarceration in New York's North Country," in a Zoom webinar held on March 18, 2021.

  • Dr. Clarence Hall's first book, A Prison in the Woods: Environment and Incarceration in New York's North Country, was published by the University of Massachusetts Press in November 2020. The book investigates the pivotal role that environments, environmental politics, and environmentalists played in the planning, construction, and operation of penitentiaries in five communities in New York's Adirondack Park.

  • Heather Huggins, assistant professor of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts, presented the paper titled “Future-making in Education through Social Presencing Theater: An awareness-based anticipatory methodology” at the 2019 Anticipation Conference, an interdisciplinary and international gathering, and the paper titled “Social Field Research Summer School, a gathering of researchers and practitioners selected through an application process” at Presencing Institute in Berlin, Germany, June 2019.

  • Sarbani Ghoshal, Ph.D., assistant professor of Biological Sciences and Geology, published a peer-reviewed article in the Journal of Biological Chemistry in July 2019, as a co-first author from her collaborative work with Professor Butler, the discoverer of peptide hormone, adropin. Her publication provides important insights about the role of adropin in maintaining liver glucose metabolism.

  • Kimberly Riegel, assistant professor in Physics, was the member spotlight for the American Association of Physics Teachers for June. The announcement was published in the AAPT June eNNOUNCER newsletter. Kimberly also published “Sonic boom propagation around a large building using a combined ray tracing/radiosity method” in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America in April 2019.

  • Kathleen Tamayo Alves, D.A., assistant professor of English, received the 2018 City University of New York Book Completion Award for "Body Language: Medicine and the Eighteenth-Century Comic Novel."
  • Regina Rochford, Ed.D., professor of English, and Ilse Schrynemakers, Ph.D., assistant professor of English, received the 2018 CUNY Community College Collaborative Pedagogical Research Grant to study the long-term performance of a large remedial-student cohort in the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP). In a small pilot investigation, it was determined that in contrast to traditional remedial-writing students, ALP students: a) were more likely to complete English 101 and English 102; b) earned significantly more college credits; c) achieved significantly higher GPAs; d) exhibited significant correlational relationships; and e) evidenced statistically similar grades in English 101 and English 102. This grant will expand this research to assess its impact on a larger population at Queensborough by analyzing the students’ ACT Reading scores, CATW scores, English 101 and 102 grades, GPAs, the number of credits earned, races/ethnicities, gender, ages and first-generation status.

  • Dugwon Seo, Ph.D., assistant professor of Engineering Technology, received the NSF H-AGEP grant award: $125,684 for 5 years (7/1/2017-6/30/2022). The Collaborative Research, the Hispanic Alliance for the Graduate Education and the Professoriate on (H-AGEP), is focusing on preparing potential faculty on Environmental Sciences and Engineering fields to respond to the national needs for professionals and instructors in these fields. It will leverage the resources of the partner schools and capitalize on their long history of collaboration in this area. We will identify a promising cohort of under-represented doctoral students, focusing on Hispanics, and provide these AGEP Fellows with the robust skill set and supportive mentoring needed to make them qualified and ultimately successful candidates for the professoriate. As a community college faculty, her role will be helping fellows to create and follow a comprehensive career development plan and extensive training in teaching and academic career skills.
  • William Ryan, Ph.D., assistant professor of English, was selected to participate in the CUNY Office of Recruitment and Diversity Faculty Fellowship Publication Program to develop an article manuscript titled, "These Publications are Reckoned Useful': The Medical Periodical in the Early Republic."
  • Susan Wengler, assistant professor of Library, received $35,021 funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program to investigate community college librarians use of and engagement with the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (Framework) from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019.

  • Steven Dahlke, D.M.A., associate professor of Music, was the musical director of the piece “Singing in the Rain” at the Wick Theatre in Boca Raton, Florida, from January 11 to February 18, 2018.

  • Paul Marchese, Ph.D., professor of Physics and Paris Svoronos, Ph.D., professor of Chemistry, mentored the student Leslie Ramirez Medrano to present a poster session titled “Nitrogen concentration trends in Long Island Sound”, and HaEun Kim to present a poster session titled " at the 256th ACS National Meeting & Exposition on August 20, 2018, held in Boston.
  • Paris Svoronos, Ph.D., professor of Chemistry mentored students to present and co-presented the following poster sessions at the 256th ACS National Meeting & Exposition in August, 2018, held in Boston: “Determination of pesticide residues at the Food and Drug Administration using the QuEChERS extraction method in conjunction with liquid and gas chromatography” by Ha Eun Kim; and “Calculation of the Ionization Constant carboxylic acids in mixed solvents via freezing point depression measurements” by Edison Mera. Dr. Svoronos was invited to give the lecture presentation “Role of the MSEIP Grant in the Success of STEM Undergraduate Research at Queensborough Community College.”

  • Paris Svoronos, Ph.D., professor of Chemistry, was honored with the American Chemical Society Fellow Award at the 256th National American Society Meeting in Boston, MA in June 2018.
  • Paris Svoronos, Ph.D., professor of Chemistry, received the 2018 Stanley C. Israel Regional Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences, by the American Chemical Society, at the 46th Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting at Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, P.A. The award is awarded for promoting diversity in the Chemical Sciences.
